Drug Treatment

Drug treatment is the only process through which an individual addicted to drugs can overcome his or her addiction. This can be done at home or in drug rehab facilities and often starts with drug detoxification and is followed by intense after care programs such as counseling and group therapy sessions, as well as 12-step programs.

Providing Support for a Person Undergoing Drug Treatment

Families and friends may be at a loss about how to show their support for a family member who is undergoing drug treatment. However, being a source of support for a family member who is undergoing drug rehabilitation is easier than most may think. Just being there, offering encouragement for the person's small accomplishments and offering to listen are some of the most effective ways to offer one's self as a source of support. Persons undergoing drug rehab also often need another person's point of view to bounce decisions off on, and family members and trusted friends are the best group of people for this job.

Common Myths about Drug Treatment

Despite the many educational resources about drug addiction online there are still those who believe in common drug rehab myths. Common myths include drug addiction as being nothing more than a character flaw, that is a voluntary behavior, and that the condition has a drug cure. In fact, addiction has no cure and it is far from being a voluntary behavior, although introduction to the addicting substance may start off as a voluntary decision by the person.

The addiction to any substance is not a character flaw but rather the manifestation of a brain disease. In most cases, intake of the substance changes the mechanism of the brain which leads the body to think that it will not be able to function normally without it.

There is no magic bullet that offers a one-stop treatment for individuals addicted to prescription and illicit substances. And while recovering addicts can endure months and years without taking the substances, they have to face the urge to use or drink every day.

Another myth about drug treatment is that the person must submit voluntarily for the treatment to be effective. In most cases, most drug addicts enter drug rehab because it was ordered by a judge or because their families forced them to seek help, and rarely because they voluntarily want to seek help just because they want to be free of their addiction.
